ICA Exhibition rooms #Construction

During these two busy weeks, my classmates and I have been working hard in order to put up our rooms so that we can exhibit our works

My class mates and I have firstly started to empty all of our rooms. We have labeled all the items of each class (chairs, tables and shelves) and them put them away in our storage room. Since our rooms were cleared, we started sanding down old paint from the walls in order to re paint the walls, yet we couldn't sand them all as there were the interactive white boards still attached to the walls where as will be removed tomorrow by the handymen.

Since our rooms were sanded fast as we had tools in order to fasten the process, I have later mixed Multi Purpose Poly-filler Powder and plastered the walls where needed.

Removals of interactive white board have happened early in the morning on day 2 so we have sanded the remaining wall faces and repeated the plastering process. Since our other walls have dried over-night, some of my classmates and with the help of handymen (who were hired by our institute) have sanded the remaining Poly-filler from the walls and started to paint the white walls which were done by the end of the day, however since we had two walls left we repeated the process so that our walls all have a base coat.

Since our rooms were 'ready' from painting, we started the feature walls, where I was in charge to start and finish the striped wall. With the help of Chiara and Adam (masking the wall), together with a couple of other students who finished it's painting this wall was done by the end of the day. Although it was not an easy job to do, I have enjoyed every second of it and very satisfied with the
final result.

Whilst our rooms were ready, my classmates have been cleaning the floors while other have been preparing the materials to be cut into curtains. During this time, myself together with Anthony we have been in the wood workshop cutting wood in order to be attached with the curtains, these pieces of wood will be utilized as frames in order to attach them to the wall. However, these wood strips were sanded after cut so that we could have a smooth, clean finish.

Since our rooms were soon finalized; Ryan, Andre' and myself have been trying to set carpets in our rooms, but they seems to be longer than we wanted so their fit wasn't very well. However, some other students have asked whom have lent them to us in order to cut them up so we can have shorter pieces that will fit our rooms. Since they were cut, some of my classmates have combined the pieces together, after that process myself with the help of other students we have vacuumed and then ironed the carpets for a clean finish.

As our rooms were almost finalized, I have helped with; placing the podiums in different rooms and also with Patrick we have helped the electrician in order to install our lights that we wanted in our corridors.

We also had to put up way findings, where I have attached vinyls to wood boards that will be hanged out-side following with attaching others in the corridors. However, things can happen and the wall attached vinyls were not liked by every-one and had various opinions due to lack of spacing. Yet, seems that the problem was later solved as I could not stay longer at school due to an appointment.

Weekly updates

#1

As the concept for the following exhibition was chosen, my classmates and I have been split into groups of different sectors where we feel most confident working on so I joined the construction team. As a group we started discussing to come up with ideas to construct our four rooms. My part here is to create a list with Adam as soon as the concept for the rooms is chosen, we'll later contact companies for different quotes and if they will give sponsorship.

Until now, what we've came up with is to cover the floor; might it be vinyl or any other material, a feature wall made out of cork, and as for lighting we're interested most in is passing wire through wood and let dimmed warm white bulbs hang down.

# 2 - 3

During these two weeks, as a construction team we had to split into sub-sections where everyone has a role to gather any information needed. Adam and I had to gather quotations for different materials from different companies. I have contacted Nexos who offer electrical/lighting systems and also SignWarehouse who could supply us vinyl to cover the whole floor surface of one of our rooms where we'll be exhibiting our work.

The rest of the team have been thinking about design proposals as how we'll be decorating our rooms to exhibit what we've been doing during the year. Yet, although we've been split into sub-sections everyone had his say on how and on what our works will be displayed during the ICA festival, so individually we gathered pictures of furniture inspirations (i.e. shelving systems, lighting systems etc.) what we think fits best to build our room and later during our lesson we shared what we've thought about until now with our lecturer. However, as we all agreed and like the ideas we've came up with, we still need to generate visuals to present and agree within a whole class.

# 4 - 5

Since that last week I've contacted Nexos and The Signwarehouse, these two weeks I've managed to gather quotations needed for lighting and vinyl to wrap our floor. Since then as a construction group we've generated more ideas for decorating our rooms, so as soon as the lists of props needed to set up our rooms I'll contact other shops for the best quotations for the needed stuff.
